Welcome to The Stakehold, the new name of your trusted EO+WD weekend newsletter!
This newsletter began as a project of EO+WD (The Research Cluster on Employee Ownership + Workplace Democracy)as a way to track and reflect on the growing movement for employee ownership and workplace democracy. It has grown into an exploration of ownership, power, governance, and belonging across sectors, models, and movements.
🐛 Why the new name?
Imagine if every time value gets created—at our workplaces, in our neighborhoods, with our data—people were asking questions about ownership:
Who contributed to this?
Who is affected by this?
Who should have a say?
Who should get a stake?
Employee ownership is the fastest-growing, most widespread example of this shift to thinking about the stakeholders of a business, in addition to its shareholders.
As we prepare to grow in 2025 and 2026, we wanted to choose a name for the newsletter that would underline this shift in thinking. The Stakehold will continue to share top news and events in employee ownership and other parts of the ownership economy, including purpose trust ownership, steward ownership, and workplace democracy. We’re based in and focus on North America, but we keep our head on a global swivel.
🦋 What’s changing?
We’re now publishing at thestakehold.com. If you were subscribed at eowd.org, you’re still in. All past posts and links will still work; they’ll redirect here.
The newsletter itself? Still low-friction, high-signal writing on employee ownership, democratic governance, the ownership economy, and more.
New interviews, case studies, tools, a few experiments, more ways for you to get involved, and a continued push to make this field more legible and more democratic.
